Despite its shooting struggles throughout the night, the Perryville girl’s basketball team (16-10) did just enough to take down Ste. Genevieve (7-14), defeating the Dragons 42-38.
The shooting woes came into play most notably during the third quarter, in which Ste. Genevieve outscored the Pirates 12-5. Aside from the sole single-digit scoring quarter, Perryville used a particularly balanced effort with 12 points in both the first and second quarters, ending on a 13-point fourth quarter to seal the win.
In total, Perryville shot just 17% from the field in the win, mainly relying on its free-throw shooting prowess to carry itself to the victory. The Pirates shot made 24 of their 33 shots at the line, shooting at a 73% clip.
Perryville’s Kyla Schnurbusch scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Pirates to the win.
The Pirates begin district play at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28 against Dexter (13-12).
