Four local golfers will be in the field for the Dalhousie Junior Championship, an American Junior Golf Association tournament set for Aug. 12 through 14 at Dalhousie Golf Club.

Tanner Werner of Jackson, Jordan Sheets of Central and Joe Wiggans of Notre Dame will compete in the boys field, while Emily Matthews, a Notre Dame graduate who is headed to Missouri State to play college golf, will be in the girls field.

Dalhousie this year elected to award its exemptions through accomplishments in the spring season rather than hosting a local qualifying event, which it did last year. Werner, Sheets and Mattthews received those exemptions, while Wiggans qualified for his performance in another event this year.

The field was announced on the AJGA Web site Friday with 94 boys and 40 girls listed. An AJGA qualifier Aug. 10 will fill out the 144-player field.

Werner was the state runner-up in Class 4 to cap his freshman season at Jackson.

Other exemptions extended by Dalhousie will go to Poplar Bluff's Trent Hillis, who earned his by winning the SEMO Conference tournament; and Dexter's Chance Holden.

The AJGA series is open to golfers ages 12 to 18. The association has more than 80 tournaments throughout the country each year.

Dalhousie's event was named the tourney of the year last year in its inaugural run.

Among the players returning to the field this year are girls champion Katie Sylvan of San Diego, Calif.; and runner-up Emma Talley of Paducah, Ky. Sylvan chipped in on the 18th hole last year for a birdie while Talley, playing in the final group, had a double-bogey and settled for second place, one stroke back.

They currently are the highest-ranked players in the field with Talley ranked 86th and Sylvan ranked 93rd in the Polo Golf Rankings. Talley has four top-10 finishes in five tournaments this year but no wins.

The girls field features four other players ranked in the top 200, including a pair of top-10 finishers from last year -- Courtney McKim of Raleigh, N.C., and Hanule Seo of St. Louis. Other top-10 finishers returning to the field are Olivia Garard of Columbine Valley, Colo., and Taylor Manning of Brentwood, Tenn.

The top player in the boys field from last year is St. Louisan Nick Langley, who finished 14th. Langley completed his sophomore year of high school golf at Parkway South with his second state tournament appearance.
