Jackson standout wide receiver Tory Meyr gained the distinction of being the only player from Southeast Missouri to be voted all-state in Class 5A as he was named second team in today's release of the large school all-state teams.
Meyr, a 5-foot-11, 155-pound senior, was easily the top receiver in the region the past year, catching 46 passes for 850 yards. He scored 13 touchdowns for the Indians, who finished with a 9-2 record and advanced to the 5A sectional round in the state playoffs..
"I don't know if there was a better football player in the state," said Jackson coach Carl Gross. "His receiving numbers spoke for themselves, but he was an excellent safety, returned kicks and punts and to play at the high level that he did at every position was remarkable. As a coaching staff, we appreciated him because he was the first to practice and he practiced at full speed. I'm proud that he made second team, but I guarantee if all six of the all-state receivers were put on the same team, he'd end up starting."
In Class 4A, Sikeston's Justin Robinson was named to the first-team as a running back after breaking school records for season and career yards. Robinson ran for 2,030 yards, averaging about 8 yards per carry. He scored 28 touchdowns.
The voting is done by the Missouri Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association.
The Class 1A-3A teams were released Tuesday.
