It's 1.35 percent better
THE ATMOSPHERE at the Notre Dame-Jackson girls basketball game and Notre Dame-Central games was outstanding. It's obvious the additional 1.35 percent of the student body Notre Dame now has pushed them over the edge against the larger public schools.
Thanks for nothing
THANK YOU for covering Scott City's game against Bell City. It seems that you would be interested in covering all of the area schools' games. But many times, such as in the Scott-Mississippi Conference Tournament, you don't put diddly-squat in the paper. Also, what would be so difficult about putting the score and stats for the JV games?
We did, in fact, have photos from the tournament Jan. 23 and Jan. 24, along with scores and information on every varsity game from each day of the event. As for JV scores, those are published -- when they're provided by coaches -- under the "Scoreboard" heading of our section.
Do the right thing
I AM responding to Jim Hall's comments on the radio at the Stoddard County Tournament. Yes, it was wrong for Bell City to walk off the court without acknowledging the win against Advance. To both coaches: No matter who starts it, you are to set an example for these players. We need coaches like you two for our kids. God knows you don't do it for the money, so teach these kids what is right.
Slanted coverage
AS A parent of two children in high school at Scott City, why would you give coverage to a player who quit the team during the season and not give coverage to the girls who actually make up the team?
Now for the girls
CONGRATULATIONS TO the well-behaved students of Central and Notre Dame. The boys varsity game was tremendous, and the fans were extremely supportive. Central, I think it's about time we show support to the girls. Hopefully we can recognize there is a problem with Central's crowd for the ladies and help push them to better levels in their season.
It's about education
IT'S FUNNY but sad to attend local basketball games. The coaches and some parents are a hoot to watch as they throw their tantrums and throw their clipboards and holler obscenities from the crowd. It is sad what this is teaching the kids. Can you imagine a math teacher grabbing a kid by the arm and yelling at him or her about math scores? The teacher would be called upon at a school board meeting and reprimanded. Where are our priorities: sports or education? Let's teach kids to have fun, play hard and challenge them in the classrooms, not just on the court.
Just the two of us
ARE CENTRAL and Notre Dame the only schools in the area? You would think so since they're the only teams that get their picture on the front page of Sports.
Size doesn't matter
COULD YOU please put bigger, longer and more detailed articles in your paper about Notre Dame? I see you still had a few inches of newspaper space left for other teams. Oh yeah, more pictures, too.
We'll work on that.
Good, clean rivalry
I WOULD like to comment on the "City of Roses" rivalry game at the Show Me Center last Tuesday. First, I'd like to comment on the great fan support from both teams, but I was disgusted when I heard parents of Notre Dame boo and make disrespectful comments at the opposing players during the game. I would also like to compliment Terry Kitchen on a job well done because the student section -- "The Jungle" -- showed great respect toward both sides.
It's the refs' fault
I WANT to congratulate the Notre Dame Bulldogs on their win over the Central Tigers. However, those refs were terrible. They missed a lot of calls that could have turned that game around. The call that really set a lot of people off was in the final seconds when Scott Chestnutt was fouled, but no foul was called. Terrible.
Diverse thinking
I AM a student at Notre Dame and was happy to see an article about Notre Dame's thoughts on getting a football team. I was taken aback when a student mentioned in the article that she wouldn't like the diverse people Notre Dame football would attract, whatever that meant. Obviously, she meant this in a good way, but I challenge this person to say what exactly she meant by "diverse people."
Givin' 'em props
AMEN TO the "true talent" comment. Some players both male and female work on both ends of the court. You would never guess this by reading the sports articles.
Watch those guys
I DON'T have a connection with either school, but at the Scott-Miss varsity tournament, Kelly was allowed many more fouls than the other team, and one referee certainly seemed to overlook a lot. I strongly feel one of the basic flaws of basketball in this area is the close association of certain officials with certain schools. Maybe the person in charge of scheduling the referees should do a better job.
Nothing new
BIG DEAL, so a much bigger school district beat a small school. What else is new? You have more communities to draw from. I would petition the school board to abolish your program if you couldn't beat that tiny school.
The final say
I AM disgusted with the individual who insulted small schools. Yes, Notre Dame and Jackson have excellent teams. The reason for that is they have youth league programs, camps, AAU during the off-season and excellent coaches, plus hundreds of athletes to pick and choose from to form their teams. Guess what? Our girls team at Delta has all the above except for the hundreds of players to choose from. So they will take their seven players, excellent coaches, loyal fans and keep on playing toward their ultimate goal of reaching the Class 1 finals in Columbia.
Enough dirty dancing
SOME OF our local high school principals and school board members need to go to the basketball games and watch the dance teams during halftime. Some of the teams are doing inappropriate dances at games, and you need to decide if this is what we want to teach our young girls and boys in high school. Is this what we want to put on display to represent our high schools?
Credit to Lowes, Palmer
AS A girls basketball fan who attended the Jackson-Notre Dame game, two things are quite obvious. First, Jackson really misses point guard Katie Lowes, who is out with a knee injury. And second, Notre Dame is a much better team when Katie Palmer is on the floor. It's no coincidence that Notre Dame was 2-6 without her and 9-1 since she has returned. Both of these young ladies are not flashy scorers but total team players who make their teammates and team better when they are on the floor.
Lacking student support
I JUST cannot understand why the college students don't have more spirit and go to these basketball games, football games and so forth. I went to one last night and there were hardly any students there, but there was one bunch of about 20 boys all dressed in red, to the skin, and they were great. They stood up the whole game, they yelled to the team and really encouraged them. I wish more students could find time to go. I think students could support their team a little better than that.
