The Jackson Indians (3-2) girls basketball team lost a close game to the Farmington Knights 61-56 on Monday at Jackson High School. Indians junior Katy St. John was injured on the first possession and although she did return at the start of the 2nd quarter, the first-quarter Knight lead was too much to overcome.
Farmington’s well-executed zone defense took the Indians center out of the game and the outside shots of Jackson were not falling. The Knights had four players in double figures, so one would think the ball was magnetized to the hoop. Indians head coach Angela Fulton said it was just a night where nothing went right.
“They hit shots and we struggled a little bit from the outside. Defensively, we were a little off and let them add whatever they wanted,” Fulton said. “When shots aren't falling while we're getting the look. Unfortunately, it was one of those nights.”
The Indians had a much better second half than the first, scoring six more points than the first half and sinking five three-point baskets. Three players finished in double figures, Camryn Alsdorf paced the team with 15 while St. John and Lillian Cole each had 10. Jackson pulled to within four a few times but Farmington bounced back each time.
Fulton said this early in the season the team is still figuring things out but they have plenty of time to get better.
“We lost a good chunk last year, even the coach, so we're trying to figure each other out. The best part about it is it's still really early in the season, so we have plenty of time,” Fulton said. “This is a good group of girls, so I do not doubt that we'll figure it out.”
The Indians will have a whole week off before traveling to Kennett next Monday at 7 p.m. to take on their fellow SEMO Conference Indians.
