Central High School's four entries in the Class 2 District 1 tennis tournament all won at least one match, but all bowed out in the quarterfinals of the singles and doubles competitions.

The Tigers failed to get any individuals qualified for state Tuesday and missed out on a team bid to sectionals on a tiebreaker that hinged on having at least one entry reach the semifinals.

Lindbergh won the team championship with 33 1/2 points. Central, which hosted the event on its courts and at Southeast Missouri State's complex, tied with Webster Groves in second place at 18 points. Neither team had a top-three finish in singles nor doubles, but Webster Groves had one singles player and one doubles team both reach the semifinals before settling for fourth-place finishes.

Central's two singles players -- Adam Baron and Anton Heemskerk -- combined for three wins before bowing out. Heemskerk lost to No. 2 seed and eventual runner-up Felipe Santos, 7-5, 6-2.

Central's doubles teams each won one match. Heath Orr and Will Ramsey, seeded No. 2 overall and state qualifiers last year, lost 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 in the quarters to Lindbergh's unseeded Kyle Tosie and Josh Nezam. Tosie, a singles state qualifier last year, and Nezam went on to win the doubles title.

"Our doubles team should've beaten them," Central coach Bud Craven said. "We've been up and down all year."
