SIKESTON -- Cape Girardeau Central High's girls tennis team captured the Class 4A, District 1 Tournament Thursday and in the process qualified singles player Eliane Hess and the doubles team of Liz Russell and Lara Golike for the upcoming state championships.
Central, which won its third straight district title, finished with 20.5 points to easily outdistance Poplar Bluff (14). Both teams qualify for sectional play in St. Louis on Oct. 17.
Jackson finished third with 11.5 points, followed by Rockwood Summit (9.5), Oakville (6), Sikeston (4.5), Eureka (4) and Farmington (0).
"I think we played the best tennis we've played all season long," said Central coach Annette Slattery. "We peaked tonight and I couldn't be happier with the way everything turned out."
Hess, a foreign exchange student from Switzerland, improved to 18-1 in dual play this season. She did not lose a game in winning all four of her matches Thursday.
Hess defeated Oakville's Amanda Black in the championship match 6-0, 6-0. She blanked Nikki Gasparatto of Eureka in the semifinals after shutting out both Kellie Opalewski of Poplar Bluff and Stephanie Spencer of Rockwood.
In the doubles final, Russell and Golike defeated Rockwood's Christy Eason and Amy Hill 6-1, 6-1.
Green-Golike, 17-1 on the season, defeated Lauren Smith and Amanda Whittenburg of Poplar Bluff in the semifinals.
They also defeated Jackson's Annie Lefebvre and Emily O'Loughlin and Oakville's Deidre Bauer and Sheela Shrinizas by identical 6-1, 6-0 scores.
Central's doubles team of Sarah Chaudhari and Jessica Burns won its opening match against a team from Oakville, but was eliminated with a second-round loss to Rockwood's Eason-Hill.
Central's Kelly Green was eliminated in the first round.
BOYS SOCCER
Cape Central 3, Sikeston 2
SIKESTON -- Robbie Winschell accounted for the lone goal of the second half as Central won on the road Thursday.
Winschell deposited the game-winner midway through the period off a pass from Arthur Pilsner.
Central (7-9-2) opened the scoring on a Cody Hill goal off an assist from Jon Mark Thompson. After Sikeston scored, Brad Bollwerk netted an unassisted goal to put Central ahead 2-1. Sikeston scored before halftime for a 2-2 tie.
Central won the JV game 6-0. Matt Kennard and Luke Oliver both finished with two goals while Paul Miller and Greg Bartosik tallied one apiece.
Notre Dame 2, Jackson 0
Zach Miller scored in the first half and Oliver Sanders added a goal in the second half to put the Bulldogs (11-1-2) back on track against Jackson (12-4-1).
Last week, Notre Dame and Jackson tied 2-2 at Jackson.
"The defense was very solid today," Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn said. "I don't think they had a good scoring opportunity in the game."
Colin Vandergraaf recorded the shutout with an assist from defenders Mark Buerle, Wesley Steele, Rob Cuba and Brian Glosemeyer. Steele missed last week's game.
The JV game ended in a 0-0 tie.
VOLLEYBALL
Jackson 11-15-15
Leopold 15-5-8
LEOPOLD -- Jackson continued its sensational season by winning a three-game road match Thursday.
The Lady Indians, now 22-2-2, received impressive performances from a host of players.
Heather Brown had 24 assists, two service aces and five blocks; Andrea Koepper had 14 kills, 10 blocks, 15 digs and four aces; Chrissi Glastetter had 15 kills, 13 digs and five blocks; Kara Thoma had eight digs and five blocks; Diane Mirley contributed eight digs; and Sara Johnson added three aces and three kills.
Leopold (12-5-1) got strong play from Gwen Vandeven and Sarah Gowen.
The JV match went to Leopold 15-12, 15-1.
Perryville 15-15
Notre Dame 9-8
PERRYVILLE -- Perryville evened its record at 11-11-2 by upending visiting Notre Dame Thursday.
The Lady Pirates got 12 service points from Jeni Blevins while Shannon Dreyer had 13 assists and six points. Also for Perryville, Nicole Blechle had five kills and eight assists, Mandy Kirn had seven kills and Kristen Taylor added five kills.
Perryville's JV won 15-10, 11-15, 15-9.
Notre Dame JV tourney
Marquand won the title Wednesday night by beating Scott City 15-12, 15-12.
Oran captured third place with a 15-2, 11-15, 15-12 win over Notre Dame.
Chaffee 13-17-15
Sikeston 15-15-13
CHAFFEE -- Jill Little had eight kills, Emily Siebert delivered nine assists and Kate Nolen scored 16 points off her serve as Chaffee edged Sikeston.
Chaffee improved to 5-9.
