Cape Girardeau's Ford & Sons American Legion baseball team opened the 2000 season Saturday night with a wild 16-11 victory over visiting Hannibal in a game that took nearly 3 1/2 hours to complete.
Ford & Sons built leads of 6-0 and 12-4 but then had to hold off a determined Hannibal squad before prevailing at Capaha Field.
Garrett Broshuis, Cape's ace, picked up the victory despite suffering from some wildness. The Advance High graduate, who is headed to the University of Missouri on a baseball scholarship, pitched the first five innings. He allowed four runs -- none of them earned --and three hits while striking out four and walking six.
Justin Cook was touched for six runs (four earned) and five hits in two innings. Jay Pierce hurled the final two frames, allowing one run and one hit.
Cape banged out 13 hits, including home runs by Scott Reinagel and Josh McIntosh. Mark Fisher had three hits and drove in four runs while McIntosh and Wes Steele each had two hits and four RBIs. Tommy Wencewicz had two hits and reached base all four times he came to the plate.
David White paced Hannibal's 10-hit attack with three. He also drove in three runs. Jeremy Ketterer added two hits.
Shea Harrison was the losing hurler. In 3 1/3 innings, he allowed eight hits and seven runs while fanning four and walking five.
