Capahas improve to 16-2 by downing Perryville

The Plaza Tire Capahas completed a perfect weekend Sunday by rolling past the host Perryville Longhorns 12-3.

Manager Jess Bolen's Capahas improved to 16-2 with their seventh straight victory. They won all four of their games over the weekend.

"We had a good weekend. There were three really good games," said Bolen, whose squad also posted a pair of 3-2 victories and a 10-6 comeback triumph.

Perryville and the Capahas were scheduled to play a doubleheader consisting of two seven-inning games but instead played one nine-inning contest.

"We do that pretty often if the temperature is really high," Bolen said. "We were going to play two because we had some pitchers we wanted to throw, but they wanted to play one, which was fine."

The Capahas banged out 17 hits, which gave them 30 hits in their last two games.

"We're starting to swing the bats," Bolen said.

Jason Blum went 4 for 4 with a double and four RBIs to pace the Capahas' offense.

Sean Bard went 3 for 6 with a home run, double and six RBIs.

"That's our first home run of the year out of the park with wood bats," Bolen said. "We've hit a couple with aluminum, and we've had a couple inside-the-parkers with wood."

Mark Hagedorn went 3 for 5 with three doubles, while Clayton Gibbons and Kyle Marshall added two hits apiece.

Logan Holthaus pitched the first five innings for the win. He allowed three hits and two runs while striking out four and walking one.

Colton Young gave up one hit and an unearned run over three innings. He struck out two and walked three.

Trey Bazzell finished with a scoreless ninth inning. He allowed one hit and fanned two.

Bard's two-run single in the first inning staked the Capahas to a 2-0 lead.

Perryville rallied for a 3-3 tie after four innings before the Capahas scored the game's last nine runs.

The Capahas went ahead for good with a run in the fifth inning. Bard's three-run homer highlighted a four-run sixth inning that made it 8-3.

Jose Robles had two of Perryville's five hits. Spencer Day was the losing pitcher.

The Capahas have won all five meetings with Perryville this year by a combined score of 50-9. The teams are scheduled to play one more time, July 6 in Cape Girardeau.

The Capahas don't play again until Saturday when they open play in the Valmeyer (Ill.) tournament at 11:30 a.m. against an opponent that has not yet been determined.
