Nothing went right for the Plaza Tire Capahas on the second day of the Valmeyer (Ill.) 4th of July Baseball Tournament.
Facing the St. Louis Printers on Saturday, the Capahas allowed 12 hits and walked nine batters. On the offensive side, the Capahas stranded 10 runners on base over the first four innings.
It all added up to a 10-1 loss for Plaza Tire, dropping the Capahas into playing for third place today against the loser of the Waterloo (Ill.)/Fairview Heights late game.
"We left the bases loaded twice and two runners on twice. We just couldn't get anybody to get the base hit with the bases loaded or with men on," lamented Capahas skipper Jess Bolen.
The Capahas trailed just 3-1 after six innings, but the Printers put the game away by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh and three more in the eighth.
Skylar Cobb (5-1) took the loss for the Capahas, going the first five innings and allowing three runs -- all earned -- on six hits, walking three and striking out nine while hitting a batter.
Jason Flores relieved and pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on just one hit but walking four batters.
Caleb Gwilliams finished up, allowing four runs on five hits while walking two and striking out three in 2 2/3 innings.
The Capahas (21-2) got their only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Brandon Bennett's single scored Kenton Parmalee.
The Printers outhit the Capahas 12-8.
