Beem holds off rally to win International

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. -- Rich Beem carded seven birdies and made a critical eagle on the 17th hole to hold off a furious rally by Steve Lowery and claim The International on Sunday.

Beem, playing the last six holes gingerly because of a back that stiffened up during a weather delay, had a 19-point round for a total of 44 points under the modified Stableford scoring system used in this event.

Beem beat Lowery by a single point for his second career victory. In his final five holes, Lowery had a rare double eagle, an eagle and a birdie.

Lowery holed out a 6-iron from 200 yards on the par-5 17th for a double-eagle 2, gaining 8 points and cutting the deficit to 1.

Beem parred the 18th, then watched anxiously from the side of the green as Lowery, with a 10-foot birdie putt for the win, ran it just past the left edge.

Beem, who entered the tournament ranked 46th on this year's PGA Tour money list, pocketed $810,000.

LPGA: Mi Hyun Kim sidestepped a late collapse to hold off fellow South Korean Hee-Won Han and win the Wendy's Championship for Children by one stroke at Dublin, Ohio.

Kim double-bogeyed the 17th hole and then salvaged par from the grandstand behind the 18th green to finish her final-round 73 for an 8-under total of 208.

The victory, worth $150,000, was Kim's second in the last three weeks in Ohio. She outplayed Kelly Robbins down the stretch to win the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic two weeks ago.

Han's closing 70 left her at 7 under for the tournament, with the third member of their playing group, Danielle Ammaccapane, alone in third place at 6 under after a 72.

SENIOR PGA: Hubert Green made a 25-foot birdie putt on the seventh playoff hole to beat Hale Irwin and win the Long Island Classic at Jericho, N.Y.

Green and Irwin entered the final round tied and each shot a 68 to finish with a 14-under 199 at the par-71 Meadow Brook Club

PGA EUROPE: Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland earned his first pro victory in just his fourth start on the European Tour, shooting a 4-under-par 67 to win the Scandinavian Masters at Stockholm, Sweden.-- From wire reports
