Hurricanes take title in St. Louis tournament

The Cape Girardeau Hurricanes, a traveling baseball team for 9-year-olds, left St. Louis with a tournament championship Saturday after coming back from an early loss.

The Hurricanes defeated Eureka 10-4 Sunday after taking an early 6-0 lead on their way to the championship win. It was the second time in the event that the Hurricanes defeated Eureka.

In Saturday's games, the Hurricanes lost their first game 8-0, then defeated Eureka 16-4 and Edwardsville, Ill., 11-9 after coming from behind in the sixth inning.

The Hurricanes returned Sunday to defeate Edwardsville again, this time 7-5, to earn a spot against Eureka in the championship game.

Among the top players for the Hurricanes in the tournament were Landon Robert (.417, three walks), Vance Tool (.333, seven stolen bases), Christian Cavaness (.667, 13 stolen bases), Cody Heisserer (.455, eight stolen bases) and Gunnar Knudtson, who caught in all five games.

Other contributors on the team are Zack Estes, Joe Siebert, Jesse Hency, Logan Henson, Zack Meyer, Aaron Arnzen and Sam Gerlach. The team is sponsored by Edgewater Glass.

Cape Girardeau golfer fires his ninth hole in one

Ed Schwent of Cape Girardeau carded his ninth career hole in one at Kimbeland Country Club.

Schwent used a 7-iron to ace No. 6, a par 3 playing 150 yards. Witnesses were Gordon Feeney, Gene Cross and Clay Hunter.

Three share victory in women's golf event

Joyce Kuntze, Beverly Hahs and Robyn Young recently placed first in a Women's Golf Association twilight scramble at Cape Girardeau Country Club.

Dana Underwood (No. 13) and Joyce Kuntze (No. 16) won the closest to the pin.

Noel wins Kentucky Lake bass fishing tournament

Brad Noel of Jackson won the SEMO BassBusters event May 17 at Kentucky Lake with a fish he won by flipping flooded buck brush with a Southern Pro tube.

Rodney Enderley of Jackson was second using a Carolina-rigged brush hog on a hard bottom area near buck brush.

Mike Woods of Jackson took big-bass honors with his fish that took his Southern Pro Tube flipped to flooded cover.

The lake was flooded and 10 feet above recreation pool. Water temperature was high 60s to low 70s. It was mostly cloudy and rainy with a high of 76 degrees.

Elfrink, Bartles win SEMO horseshoe event

Tyler Elfrink and Kevin Bartles teamed to win the Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association event Sunday at Scott City Park.

Cori Stoverink and Ron LeGrand were second, and Perry Seyes and Larry Burford was third.

Randy Grady and Kory Kluesner won May 11 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Oran. Stoverink and Don Leach were second, and Karen Jansen and Bob Burnett finished third.
