SIKESTON -- Wilma Young died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, at her residence in Sikeston. She was 92.
She was born April 20, 1906, in Sandersville, Miss., daughter of Dr. John Duncan and Anna E. Heidelburg Smith. She taught home economics in the Sikeston schools for 10 years, retiring in 1971.
She also taught school in Petal, Miss., for 16 years.
She married L. Hemba Young Nov. 13, 1952, in Hattiesburg, Miss. He survives. Also surviving are a son, John H. Young of Jonesboro, Ark.; a brother, Harold Smith of Vicksburg, Miss.; a sister, Lillian Smith Reed of Laural, Miss; and two grandsons.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
She was a member of the Hunter Memorial First Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon and elder. She also was a member of Women of the Church and was a Sunday school and youth adviser for more than 15 years.
She was a member of the Scott County Teachers Association and the Retired Teachers Association.
In 1978, she was named Sikeston Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year. In 1987, she was Heritage House Queen and Heritage House Cotton Carnival Queen.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston. Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hunter Memorial First Presbyterian Church in Sikeston, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas N. Bass officiating.
Burial will be at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sikeston.
