SIKESTON -- Wilfred J. "Willie" Scherer, 77, of Sikeston died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at Clearview Nursing Center in Sikeston.

He was born Dec. 25, 1921, in Tanner, son of Theodore P. and Florence Frey Scherer. He and Ruth Struwe were married March 4, 1944, in Sikeston.

He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 3151, where he had served as treasurer for 15 years. He worked as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; A son, J. Stephen Scherer of Leawood, Kan.; two daughters, Sharon Scherer Lynch of Memphis, Tenn. and Sydney Gilliland of Leawood, Kan.; a sister, Mildred Melton of Upland, Calif., and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter.

Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Church, with Monsignor William Stanton officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
