William S. Winter, 89, of Cairo, Ill. died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. He was born Jan. 13, 1918, in Cairo, son of William and Margaret Strong Winter.
He was married to Patricia Lyman Parks.
Winter was a member of the Church of the Redeemer in Cairo, where he served as church treasurer for many years and was also a member of the church vestry. He was a member of Cairo Elks Lodge 651, the Cairo Rotary Club and had served as a member of the Cairo City Council.
Winter was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Air Force. He was employed as a supervisor with Farrow Lumber Co. and retired from there.
He is survived by his first wife, Patricia Winter of Cairo; two sons, William S. Winter Jr. of Milpitis, Calif. and Tim Layton of Charleston, Mo.; daughter, Judi Childers of Cairo; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21 at the Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of the Redeemer with the Revs. Gene Tucker and Richard Swan officiating.
Interment will follow at Cairo City Cemetery in Villa Ridge, Ill. with military honors offered by the Pulaski County Memorial VFW Post 8891 of Mounds, Ill., the Cairo VFW Post 2649 and the Louis Phares American Legion Post 178 of Villa Ridge.
