William Cartner

MOUNDS, Ill. -- William Wayne Cartner, 84, of Mounds, formerly of Thebes, Ill., died Saturday, April 1, 2006, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion, Ill.

He was born July 13, 1921, in Thebes, son of Guy Washington and Blanche Ella Jones Cartner. He and Maryellis Jones were married on Nov. 15, 1947, in Cairo, Ill. She died June 25, 2004.

Cartner was a member of the Villa Ridge Union Church, Scottish Rites, Caledonia Masonic Lodge 47 AF and AM and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 178 of Olive Branch; member and past commander of the VFW Post 8891 and a Shriner. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a salesman for the Krey Meat Company and retired from the Pulaski County General Assistance Office in Mounds.

Survivors include a son, Lyman Wayne Cartner of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Lana Tosi of Beverly, Mass.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Jones Funeral Home in Villa Ridge with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. by the members of the Caledonia Lodge 47.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Ralph Kaufman officiating. Interment will be at the National Cemetery Mound City with full military honors given by members of the Pulaski County VFW Post 8891.
