Weldon H. "Coach" Hager, 94, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2020, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Jan. 8, 1926, in Cape Girardeau, the son of Walter and Christine Hager. He married Mary Deevers Brockmire in 1961. She passed away in 2003.
He was a 1943 graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School and received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Southeast Missouri State University and his Master of Science from Washington University.
Weldon served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 as a radioman in the Pacific theater.
In 1949, he began his career in education at Hancock Place High School in St. Louis County, where he coached baseball, basketball and track. In 1952, he began his 40-year career on the faculty and staff of Cape Girardeau Central High School. He taught mathematics and drivers education and coached both baseball and basketball. In 1968, Weldon became director of student activities and in 1977 assistant principal. He retired from the latter position in 1992.
Weldon was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served as an usher at its 10:30 a.m. service for 74 years. In his retirement, he served as a volunteer at Lutheran Home.
He is survived by his brother, Harold (Jeanine) Hager of Cape Girardeau; son, Ronald Brockmire (Sandra Ilsley) of Chiefland, Florida; grandson, Timothy Brockmire of Georgia; and granddaughter, Patricia Brockmire of Cape Girardeau. Also surviving are nieces, Wendy Hager (Karl) Kunc of Virginia and Kim Hager (Spencer) Train of Texas; and a great-niece and -nephew, Katy and Keenan Kunc of Virginia.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Lonnie Brockmire; and a sister, Lucille Hager.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with funeral immediately following, with the Rev. Douglas Breite officiating. Burial will be in Lorimier Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Trinity Lutheran Church, 100 N. Frederick St., Cape Girardeau, MO 63701.
