Wayne Howard McPherson, 78, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018, at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, where he had been receiving treatment since 1999.
He was born March 18, 1940, in Beatrice, Nebraska, to Raymond and Gladys Fischer McPherson. He and Joan See were married Aug. 18, 1962.
He retired from Southeast Missouri State University in 1996, after teaching mathematics for 31 years.
Wayne loved family, helping others, watching college sports, teaching, collecting antiques and taking pictures.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and a Bible study group at Cape Bible Chapel. He taught Sunday school and Youth Training Union groups for many years.
His recent passion was digital photography. Over the last 20 years, Wayne would make certain the parents of Southeast and Capaha baseball players had pictures of their son in action. He seldom missed a game and would take 200-500 pictures per game, picking out the best to post and share with players. He also was an avid fan of nature, sharing many pictures online, and he enjoyed fishing with his buddies, sometimes even with his wife.
Survivors include his wife, Joan McPherson; two sisters, Connie (Ken) Wacker of Greeley, Colorado, and Gwen (Roy) Carr of Fort Collins, Colorado; sisters-in-law, Betty Scheuerman (Joan's sister) and Tava See (Joan's sister-in-law) of Scott City, Kansas; and many friends.
A celebration of Wayne's life will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home. Dr. Ron Winstead will lead a brief time of sharing at 1 p.m., followed by an informal gathering of family and friends.
