Helen Dawanda "Wanda" Bess, 86, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001. She was born Oct. 23, 1915, at Portageville, Mo., daughter of Clint K. and Lillian Ellen Hamilton Burgess. She and James William "Bill" Bess Jr. were married Oct. 11, 1936, in Blytheville, Ark. He died March 16, 2000...

Helen Dawanda "Wanda" Bess, 86, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001.

She was born Oct. 23, 1915, at Portageville, Mo., daughter of Clint K. and Lillian Ellen Hamilton Burgess. She and James William "Bill" Bess Jr. were married Oct. 11, 1936, in Blytheville, Ark. He died March 16, 2000.

Wanda was a member of First Baptist Church, Psi Psi Psi sorority, and had been active in Scouting.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James W. Bess III and Jan Bess of Rockwall, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Sue Bess Hunt and Dr. Robert Hunt of Cape Girardeau; and a sister-in-law, Estelle Bess Ricketts of Falls Church, Va.

Also surviving are five grandchildren, Dr. Steven Robert Hunt of St. Louis, Lynn Hunt Kosup of St. Louis, James W. Bess IV of Dallas, Texas, Michael Christopher Bess of Denton, Texas, Julie Michelle Bess of Memphis, Tenn.; six great-grandchildren, Steven Kristopher Kosup and Katherine Lynn Kosup of St. Louis, Hayden Lan Hunt and Andrew Tai Hunt of St. Louis, Michael Christopher Bess Jr. of Denton, and James William Bess V of Dallas.

Wanda was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Funeral Home from 10-10:45 a.m. today, to be followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at Cape County Memorial Park Gazebo. Dr. Clayton Smith will officiate. Vocalist will be Alice Harnes.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Steven Robert Hunt, James W. Bess IV, Kristopher G. Kosup, Rocky Wilferth, Dr. Edwin Noffel, Tommy Huskey, and Michael Christopher Bess.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church or Centenary United Methodist Church.
