Walter Martin Sewing, 92, of Jackson passed away Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015, at Jackson Manor Nursing Home.
He was born Dec. 8, 1922, in Gordonville, son of Fritz and Anna Grossheider Sewing. He and Norma Peetz were married July 28, 1946, in Gordonville.
Walter was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson since 1954, where he served on various committees, including budget collector and trustee. He helped build the original St. Paul School West.
He was a carpenter with Penzel Construction Co. and Landgraf Construction Co., retiring in 1985. He also did independent carpentry for various people after retirement. Beyond that he enjoyed woodworking in his shop at home.
He was in the U.S. Coast Guard from January 1945 to August 1946, having served on the SS Schuyler Colfax, SS J.J. Coney and the SS Allen Seeger as an oiler.
Loving survivors include his wife, Norma; three sons, Gerald (Kathy) Sewing and Tom (Debra) Sewing of Jackson and Andy Sewing of St. Charles, Missouri; two daughters, Brenda (Gary) Hester of Chaffee, Missouri, and Daphne Sewing of Cedar, Utah; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Walter M. "Marty" Sewing Jr. in 1975; a granddaughter; a brother; and two sisters.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jason Shaw officiating. Interment will be in Russell Heights Cemetery.
