CHAFFEE -- Funeral for Walter Benton Oakes of Chaffee will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee. The Rev. William Marshall will officiate.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bassett Cemetery in Bassett, Ark.

Friends may call at the chapel after 5 p.m. today.

Oakes, 85, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Aug. 20, 1913, in Guntersville, Ala., son of William Henry and Genny A. Kelly Oakes. He and Ellen Pair were married Dec. 25, 1965, at Benton. She died April 30, 1996.

Oakes was a retired farmer, and member of Chaffee Assembly of God Church. He moved here eight years ago from Poplar Bluff. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include four sons, the Rev. L.G. Oakes of Bald Knob, Ark., Glenn Oakes of Osceola, Ark., Ricky Cobb of Chaffee, David Oakes of Qulin; seven daughters, Nellie Oakes of Gatesville, Texas, Joyce Grimes of Osceola, Evie Henderson of Olive Branch, Ill., Brenda Reed of Poplar Bluff, Judy Akridge of Campbell, Linda Templeton of St. Peters, and Kay Coleson of Chaffee.

Also surviving are three sisters, Bessie Harrison of Union Grove, Ala., Nola Durham of Morgan City, Ala., Sadie Collins of Jonesboro, Ark.; a brother, Norman Oakes of Lepanto, Ark.; 43 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, three brothers and three sisters.
