Walter Ray Maxwell, 84, of the Dogwood community near East Prairie, Mo., died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at his home.

He was born March 20, 1919, at Bertrand, Mo., to Walter and Nettie Holland Maxwell.

He married Betty Bone, who preceded him in death.

He lived in Collier, Tenn., from the early 1970s and was a retired carpenter. He moved back to Dogwood in 1989. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Sea Bees in the U.S. Navy. He attended Dogwood Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Chuck Maxwell of Collierville, Tenn.; a daughter, Joycelyn Mason of Okalahoma City, Okla.; two brothers, Leland Maxwell and Harland Maxwell, both of Sikeston, Mo.; two sisters, Edna Heath of East Prairie and Blanche Blackman of Charleston, Mo.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a son and a sister.

Visitation will be at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel with the Rev. Harold Norton and the Rev. Charles Carr officiating. Burial will be in Dogwood Cemetery.
