Walter J. Berkbigler, 89, of Cape Girardeau, died Friday, Aug. 30, 1996, at the Fountainbleau Lodge.
He was born Nov. 26, 1906, in Millheim, son of Martin and Theresa Baudendistel Berkbuegler. He and Opal M. Henderson were married April 7, 1930, at Brewer. She died Dec. 20, 1992.
Berkbigler was employed by the United Shoe Machine Corp. Upon retirement, he worked in maintenance at St. Vincent's College. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include a son, the Rev. Don Berkbigler of Perryville; a brother, Edgar Berkbuegler of St. Louis; two sisters, Lanita Guyot of Denver and Clara Beckerman of St. Louis; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter and four brothers.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today at St. Vincent's de Paul Church. Parish prayers are at 7, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary. A fourth-degree Knights of Columbus honor guard will be present from 7 to 8.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent de Paul. The Rev. Don Berkbigler will officiate, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Lorberg Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
