Walter H. Geringer, 77, 3120 Independence, died Monday, Sept. 23, 1991, at Chateau Girardeau Health Care Center.

He was born July 6, 1914, in Cape Girardeau, son of Anton and Rosa Schott Geringer. He and Oma Schlueter were married July 12, 1945, in Cape Girardeau.

A graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, Geringer taught a year at Cape Girardeau Vo-Tech School.

He served in the U.S. Navy from August 1935 to May 1956, retiring as lieutenant commander at the Pentagon.

Geringer was involved in the North African Invasion, and was in Palermo, Sicily. While he was on board the USS Mt. McKinley, the crew transported representatives from 10 nations to Japan for signing of the peace treaty.

He was a member of Disabled American Veterans and St. Mary's Cathedral, and a 4th Degree Knight with Knights of Columbus. He was active in St. Vincent DePaul Society and Cursillo.

Survivors include his wife; a brother, Gilbert Geringer of Cape Girardeau, and two sisters, Nora Crosnoe of Cape Girardeau and Ida Dohogne of Memphis, Tenn.

A brother, Rupert Geringer of Cape Girardeau, died in 1990.

Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Revs. Michael Zoellner, Al Hoernig and James Seyer will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, with graveside rites by the Naval Reserve Unit in Cape Girardeau.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, with parish prayers at 7:30 and KC rosary at 8.
