Walter Floyd

Walter Wesley Floyd, 80, of Oak Ridge died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Aug. 27, 1931, in Oriole, Mo., to Albert Edwin and Edith Vera Smith Floyd. He and Melva L. Davis were married Aug. 9, 1953, at Iona Baptist Church.

Floyd was in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954, serving in Korea. He received a Purple Heart.

After the war, Walter worked for Motorola in St. Louis then attended the highway patrol academy. He went on to serve with the Crystal City Police Department.

After moving back to the Jackson area, Walter was a truck driver for Kasten Brick Co., Crites and Sailer, Delta Asphalt, Truck Transport, Fronabarger Concreters and Wilson Casket Co.

He was a member of Iona Baptist Church, Teamsters Local of Cape Girardeau, life member of the DAV and VFW Post 3838 of Cape Girardeau and a member of Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 of Jackson.

Walter is survived by his wife, Melva of Oak Ridge; six sons, Dennis and Craig (Barbara) Floyd of Oak Ridge, Douglas (Susan), Richard (Susan) and Bradley (Martha) Floyd of Millersville, and John (Angie) Floyd of Jackson; two brothers, Nelson Floyd of O'Fallon, Mo., and Charles Floyd of Delta; two stepbrothers, George and Bill Huey of Cape Girardeau; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and a stepbrother.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Cracraft-Miller Funeral Home in Jackson. An American Legion Honor Guard service will be held at 7 p.m.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Sam Roethemeyer officiating. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson, with full military honors.

Memorials may be made to the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.
