Virginia Vinyard Bailey, 95, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2012, at Chateau Girardeau. She was born Nov. 16, 1916, in Cape Girardeau, to Benjamin and Lura Gee Vinyard. She spent most of her life in Portageville, Mo. Survivors include her husband, retired Judge John R. Bailey; three daughters, Barbara Bailey Bradford of St. Louis, Marcia Bailey Planchon of Memphis, Tenn., Rebecca Bailey Betz of Cape Girardeau; seven grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren...

Virginia Vinyard Bailey, 95, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2012, at Chateau Girardeau.

She was born Nov. 16, 1916, in Cape Girardeau, to Benjamin and Lura Gee Vinyard. She spent most of her life in Portageville, Mo.

Survivors include her husband, retired Judge John R. Bailey; three daughters, Barbara Bailey Bradford of St. Louis, Marcia Bailey Planchon of Memphis, Tenn., Rebecca Bailey Betz of Cape Girardeau; seven grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Bailey is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and earned degrees in French and English.

She taught French at Portageville High School 16 years. She traveled extensively with her husband to more than 30 countries on five continents, but her favorite destination was always France where they returned on numerous trips.

Mrs. Bailey was a charter member of PEO chapter GU in Portageville and became a member of chapter BI in Cape Girardeau when she and Judge Bailey moved here nine years ago. She was also active in the Portageville Garden Club and Girl Scouts of America. Judge and Mrs. Bailey were longtime members of Portageville United Methodist Church, but upon moving to Cape Girardeau she returned to the church of her youth, First Presbyterian Church.

Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. to service time Friday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Bill Vincent officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.
