Viola E. Garber, 89, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 1996, at the Lutheran Home.
She was born March 20, 1907, in Alamo, Tenn., daughter of Eugene and Jane Kelley Nichols. She first married J. Glenn Young in 1939. He died May 8, 1963. She later married Charles W. Garber Oct. 12, 1970. He died Dec. 28, 1978.
Garber graduated from Southeast Missouri State University, and received a master's degree at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
She taught school 34 years, including five years each at Pascola and Caruthersville, a year at Jackson, and 19 years at Franklin School in Cape Girardeau.
Garber was a member of Missouri and National Retired Teachers Associations, and was the first president of the Association for Childhood Education at Southeast Missouri State University.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was superintendent of the Junior Sunday School Department 20 years, served as president of Women's Missionary Union, was associate young people's leader, and was a past president of her Sunday School Class.
Garber was a member of Order of Eastern Star, and Southeast Missouri Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Anita Maddox of Chesterfield, and a stepgrandson.
Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 4-7 p.m. today.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the chapel, with the Rev. John Owen officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park.
