Viola Gertrude Carey, 91, of Bridgeton died Thursday, May 29, 1997, at Mark Twain Manor in Bridgeton.
She was born Jan. 23, 1906, in St. Louis, daughter of James R. and Martha D. Mitchell Byerly. She and Arthur Stanley "Scotty" Carey Sr. were married Jan. 29, 1927, in Memphis, Tenn. He died June 5, 1973.
Carey was a graduate of Webster Groves High School, and a cosmetology college in St. Louis. She moved to Cape Girardeau in 1931 from Valley Park, and moved to Bridgeton in 1996. She worked at the Tot/Teen Shop several years. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Joan Patricia Ponder of Bridgeton; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, brother, and sister.
Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 4-8 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Christ Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Brant Hazlett officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park.
