MARBLE HILL, Mo. — Vernon Roy Smith, 87, of Marble Hill died Sunday, May 18, 2008, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Jan. 22, 1921, in West Frankfort, Ill., son of Roy D. and Reba Dickerson Smith. He and Mae Jewell Williams were married Aug. 22, 1951. She died March 21, 2004. He and Veda M. Mouser were married Dec. 12, 2006, at Benton, Mo.
Smith was an assembly line worker at General Motors Corvette Plant, retiring in 1983. He was a licensed minister and a member of Haven of Hope United Pentecostal Church.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Darrell Smith of Marion, Ohio; a daughter, Pam Ford of Dexter, Mo.; a stepson, Daren West of East Alton, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Darla Smith of Moro, Ill.; two sisters, Helen Kelley of Western Grove, Ark., Esther Smith of Bethany, Ill.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and a great-stepgrandchild.
He was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Cracraft-Miller Funeral Home in Jackson.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Robert Poe officiating. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery at Jackson with full military honors.
