Verna M. Jones, 81, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Jackson, passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015, at Fountainbleau Lodge. She was born Dec. 17, 1933, in Oak Ridge, the daughter of Leo R. and Pearl M. Dambach Petzoldt. She and Stanley Jones were married Feb. 3, 1952. He passed away Dec. 1, 1999...

Verna M. Jones, 81, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Jackson, passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015, at Fountainbleau Lodge.

She was born Dec. 17, 1933, in Oak Ridge, the daughter of Leo R. and Pearl M. Dambach Petzoldt. She and Stanley Jones were married Feb. 3, 1952. He passed away Dec. 1, 1999.

Verna graduated from Oak Ridge High School as the salutatorian of her class. She worked at Southwestern Bell Co. in Cape Girardeau as an operator. Verna was a resident of Cape Girardeau until 1968, when she and Stanley moved to Dexter, Missouri. In 1999 she moved to Jackson.

She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Fruitland. She enjoyed sewing and playing the piano. She also volunteered as a Girl Scout leader. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Loving survivors include a son, Darrell (Jackie) Jones of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Lisa (Paul) Gard of Perryville; four grandchildren, Mindy Jones and her fiancé Justin Lorenz, Bradley (Janet) Jones, Shayna Snell and Michaela Gard; three great-grandsons, Ayden, Ryker and Zachary Jones; two sisters, Dorothy Bailey of Bryant, Arkansas, and Fern Rehm of Advance.

Also surviving are many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 47 years and one son, Steven W. Jones, and an infant son, Rodney Jones.

Friends may call from noon until time of service today at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Interment will be in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
