Velva Mitchell, 86, of Cape Girardeau passed away Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, at Lutheran Home.

She was born Aug. 30, 1936, in Potosi, Missouri, daughter of Clarence and Dollie Summers Ray. She and Jerry Ray Mitchell were married June 16, 1956, in St. Louis. He passed away June 17, 2004.

She and Jerry settled in St. Louis, where they raised their family. After retiring, they moved to Jackson in 1988. Velva attended The Bridge Church in Cape Girardeau.

Loving survivors include two children, Michael (Kathy Hollenbeck) Mitchell of Cape Girardeau and Shelby (John) Stroup of Gordonville; five grandchildren, Jessica (Brendon) Kooyer, Amanda (Brett) Jeffers, Ryan (Morgan) Stroup, Lindsay (Lacey) Stroup and Kelly (Kaci) Mitchell; and seven great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Dylan, Alyssa, Olivia, Josie, Annette and Summit.

Also surviving are two brothers, Marty (Cathy) Ray and Gary (Bonnie) Ray of St. Louis.

Velva was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, and a brother, Jack Ray.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday, Jan. 21, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at the funeral home, with Rocky and Laura Strand officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in St. Louis.

The family suggests contributions be made to The Bridge Church.
