Thurman Melvin Travelstead, 84, 2418 Masters, died Friday, Nov. 29, 1996, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
He was born April 24, 1912, in Advance, son of Milo and Maggie Shell Travelstead. He first married Grace Ross June 5, 1938, at Dexter. She died Nov. 22, 1982. He and Betty Sams were married Aug. 28, 1993, in Cape Girardeau.
Travelstead received a bachelor of science degree in education from SIU-Carbondale, and master's in education from the University of Missouri.
He was a teacher and principal at Advance, Sikeston and Caruthersville schools. He later was a representative and traveled for Scott, Foresman and Co. 22 years.
Travelstead moved to Cape Girardeau in 1950 from Caruthersville. He was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Tharon Travelstead of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Sarah Schlimme of Columbia, Cora Welker of Monroe City; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 4-7 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the chapel, with the Rev. John Owen officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park.
