Thomas H. Abernathy, 72, 1515 N. Henderson, died Monday, Jan. 13, 1991, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.
He was born July 6, 1919, at Cape Girardeau Route 1, son of Robert and Lela Singleton Abernathy.
He married Mamie Kraemer on July 17, 1947, at Blytheville, Ark.
Survivors include his wife; five brothers, Glenn Abernathy of Cape Girardeau, Carl Abernathy of Jackson, Elmer Abernathy of Sedgewickville, Buck Abernathy, Jackson Route 4, and Lloyd Abernathy of McLouth, Kan.; three sisters, Grace Craft, Jackson Route 4, Betty and Alma Abernathy, Cape Girardeau Route 1.
He was a veteran of World War II in the infantry, and spent 23 months in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Campaign Medal of Asiatic Pacific Theater, the American Defense Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was a lifelong resident of Cape Girardeau County, and a member of Iona Baptist Church. He was a past Sunday School superintendent, past church trustee, a member of the parsonage finance committee, and had taught the adult Sunday School class for many years.
Friends may call today between 4 to 8 p.m. at Ford & Sons Sprigg Street Chapel.
Funeral service will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home with the Revs. Eddie Dodson and Don Ford officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park.
