Thad L. Stubbs, 90, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, Nov. 6, 1997, at his home.
He was born March 26, 1907, in Blodgett, son of William H. and Ella Kay Powell Stubbs. He and E.E. "Betty" Dorton were married Sept. 16, 1937, in Cape Girardeau. She died Dec. 10, 1996.
Stubbs graduated from Blodgett High School in 1925. The family moved to Cape Girardeau and started Stubbs Root Beer Garden in 1925. After prohibition, the family ran Stubbs' Beer Garden from June 30, 1931, to June 30, 1974.
Stubbs was a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University where he played halfback. He attended St. Louis School of Pharmacy. Later he ran a boarding house dorm for Southeast. He was in business a total of 43 years.
He was a member of the St. Marks Masonic Lodge 93 AF/AM and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church.
He is survived by two sons, Dr. David Stubbs of Des Moines, Iowa, and Dr. John Stubbs of Berkeley, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
Two brothers preceded him in death.
Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Mount Auburn Chapel, with the Rev. Clayton Smith Officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
