Susan Elizabeth Long Higgerson, 47, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

She was born Dec. 26, 1959, at Cape Girardeau, daughter of Carl William and Joanna Drum Long. She and Steven Higgerson were married in 1984.

A lifelong resident of Cape Girardeau, she graduated from Central High School and Southeast Missouri State University, where she majored in both French and English. She also received a master of arts in English from the university and studied French for a period at Laval University in Quebec. After she completed a master of arts degree in Library Science, she became a librarian at Kent Library at Southeast, where she was employed more than 20 years.

Survivors include two sons, Steven Conrad and Stuart Caldwell Higgerson, both of Cape Girardeau; father and stepmother, Carl W. and Helen L. Long of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Ronald J. (Celina) Long of Wheaton, Ill.; three nephews and two nieces. She is also survived by dear friends who assisted and comforted her throughout her illness.

She was preceded in death by her mother and a brother.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Robert Housby officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.

The family requests donations in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, Texas, 77210.
