Stone Manes, 89, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Jackson, passed away Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, at Chateau Girardeau Health Center.
Manes was born in Stoutland, Mo., on Sept. 22, 1922. He graduated from Stoutland High School at age 16 and Southwest Missouri Teachers' College in Springfield, Mo., in 1943.
Stone served in the Army in World War II as a tank driver in the European Theater and then with occupation forces in Biarritz, France.
He married Dorothy Marie Kasten in June 2, 1944, in Jackson. They had three children: Jean Weber of Olney, Ill., Fran Gatlin of Oakton, Va., and Kevin Manes of St. Charles, Mo. There are eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren from that marriage. Dorothy died in 1977.
Then in 1978, Stone married Alice Thyr Manes in Beaumont, Texas. Her children are Myrna Manes of Madrid, Spain, Paul Manes of New York City, Jeanette Manes of Long Beach, Calif., and Ann Manes of Lumberton, Texas. She had eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Alice died in 2011.
Stone was an accountant for Ceramo in Jackson 58 years. He was a dedicated Rotarian with perfect attendance since 1959. He served as president of Jackson Rotary Club and was a past district governor. Stone led a Rotary group study exchange in Sweden.
Stone was a member of the board of directors of Southeast Hospital more than 25 years and had served terms as president of that board. He was on the board of Missouri Motor Carriers many years, including terms as president and treasurer. He served on the library board in Jackson.
Stone was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and served the church in many capacities, including choir director and elder. He had been director of a community choir in Jackson. He had a wonderful tenor voice and was often sought after as a soloist.
Stone loved to travel and went on trips all over the world. He lived in Jackson until moving to Chateau Girardeau four years ago.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson, with the Rev. Robert M. Henrichs officiating. Entombment will be in Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum.
