Stella Emma Schmittzehe, 93, of Monroe, La., and formerly of Cape Girardeau, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 1997, at Sterlington Hospital in Monroe. Stella Emma Schmittzehe, 93, of Monroe, La., and formerly of Cape Girardeau, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 1997, at Sterlington Hospital in Monroe.

She was born March 17, 1904, in Benton to Lawrence and Catherine Glasser Strack.

She married Gustav Schmittzehe on June 24, 1929, in Cape Girardeau. He died May 11, 1983.

She was a homemaker and also had worked at old St. Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau. She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral Parish, St. Ann Sodality, the Legion of Mary and was active in the quilting group at the church.

She lived in Cape Girardeau most of her life, moving to Monroe in 1989.

Survivors include four sons, Clarence Schmittzehe and Dan Schmittzehe, both of Monroe, Franklin Schmittzehe of Dixon and John Schmittzehe of Baton Rouge, La.; a sister, Blandina Smith of Afton; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Two brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

Visitation is today from 5 p.m. to 8 at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau with parish prayers at 7.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Cape Girardeau, with Msgr. Richard Rolwing officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
