Stanley Ivan Popp, 84, of Cape Girardeau passed away Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014. He had been a resident of the Lutheran Home six weeks.
He was born May 8, 1930, son of Walter William John and Dorena Henriette Reimann Popp of Cape Girardeau. He was a lifelong resident of Cape Girardeau. He and Shirley Marie Suedekum were married May 20, 1956.
Stan graduated from Trinity Lutheran School, Central High School and Southeast Missouri State University.
During the Korean War he served with Mobile Boat Pool No. 1 in Sasebo, Japan, and also aboard the ammunition ship USS Ranier AE5, where he attained the rank of damage controlman 2nd class.
He was an agent with American Family Insurance 43 years, retiring Jan. 1, 2000. While an agent he was the facilitator of the annual Whingey Dingey reunion group 40 years, and he rejoiced in their annual get-togethers. He was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau where he was baptized, confirmed and sang in the choir. As a member of the church he was envelope committee chairman more than 40 years, delivered Meals on Wheels, and participated in the Men's Club and Wednesday morning Bible class.
Stan was a past chairman of the Cape Girardeau County Red Cross. He was active in Cape Girardeau Jaycees and Breakfast Optimist Club where he had 34 years perfect attendance. He was a member of VFW Post 3838 and American Legion Post 63. Stan accumulated many hours of service as a volunteer at the Missouri Veterans Home and Saint Francis Medical Center, where he was a member of the auxiliary. He was a member of the USS APL-30, Serv Pac Unit 4 Retirement Group and regularly attended the annual meetings with his brothers and sisters-in-law.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Tammy (Jerry) Jasiek of St. Louis and Lisa Johnston of St. Charles, Missouri; two grandchildren, Alex Jasiek and Madison Johnston; and a brother, Donald Popp of St. Charles.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Visitation will be from noon until service time at 2 p.m. Friday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home. The Revs. Douglas C. Breite and Loren Boettcher will officiate. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park, with full military honors by the Missouri Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church or Trinity Lutheran School in Cape Girardeau.
