Simon Andrew Essner, 97, son of the late Leo and Rosa Urhahn Essner, was born Oct. 1, 1922, in New Hamburg, Missouri, and departed this life Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2020, at his home in Kelso, Missouri, surrounded by his family.
On May 20, 1950, he married Clara Diebold Essner at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Kelso. She survives.
Also surviving is one daughter, Carol (Chris) Peters of Cape Girardeau; sons, Ralph (Donna) Essner of Scott City, Donald (Clara) Essner of Chaffee, Missouri, and Mark (Anita) Essner of Scott City; brothers, Herman (Dorothy) Essner of St. Louis and Paul Essner of New Hamburg; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Vincent and John Essner.
Simon was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army, and a lifelong member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 6420.
Due to the COVID pandemic, the family respectfully wishes that services be private and family only. The funeral Mass will be live streamed Saturday on Facebook: @staugustinekelso.
Burial will be with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be made to St. Augustine Catholic Church.
