CHARLESTON -- Sidney Lee Staples, 78, of Charleston died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born Feb. 15, 1921, at Wyatt, son of George Duncan and Martha Jane Griggs Staples. He and Joyce Ann Ashlock were married Jan. 3, 1948...

CHARLESTON -- Sidney Lee Staples, 78, of Charleston died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Feb. 15, 1921, at Wyatt, son of George Duncan and Martha Jane Griggs Staples. He and Joyce Ann Ashlock were married Jan. 3, 1948.

Staples lived in Charleston most of his life. He was an engineer with Ingram Barge Line, retiring in 1984. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Lester Staples of St. Louis, Sidney Staples of Memphis, Tenn.; two daughters, Darlene Felts of Sikeston and Jeannie Staples of St. Louis.

He was preceded in death by four brothers.

Friends may call at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston after noon Friday.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Rev. Gerald Collier will officiate. Private burial will follow.
