Shirley K. Abernathy, 84, of Jackson passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, at her son's home near Millersville. She was born Sept. 18, 1930, in Jackson, daughter of Jessie P. and Tishie Seabaugh Smith. She and John Albert Kinder were married in 1948 and divorced in 1961. She and Carl Abernathy were married in 1964. He passed away March 30, 1995...

Shirley K. Abernathy, 84, of Jackson passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, at her son's home near Millersville.

She was born Sept. 18, 1930, in Jackson, daughter of Jessie P. and Tishie Seabaugh Smith. She and John Albert Kinder were married in 1948 and divorced in 1961. She and Carl Abernathy were married in 1964. He passed away March 30, 1995.

Shirley was a member of First Baptist Church in Jackson, where she was active in Sunday school class. She worked for the former International Shoe Factory, the former Jackson Hosiery Mill and the former LeeRowan (currently Rubbermaid), all in Jackson, retiring in 1996. Shirley enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling.

Loving survivors include two sons, Stewart (Becky) Kinder of Marble Hill, Missouri, and Stanley (Robin) Kinder of Jackson; two stepsons, Doyle Abernathy of Jackson and Marvin Abernathy of Texas; a stepdaughter, Carole Jones of Jackson; a brother, Bill (Mildred) Smith of Whitewater; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth "Liz" Smith of Jackson; three grandchildren, Robin Godwin, Kia Abernathy and Michael Kinder; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, and a brother, Jerry Smith.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Lucas Clabaugh officiating. Interment will be in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to First Baptist Church in Jackson.
