Shirleen D. "Shirl" Byers, 73 years of age, of 1572 Lexington St., Cape Girardeau, MO passed away Thursday, June 18, 1998 at her home. Born September 9, 1924 in Cape Girardeau, MO, daughter of the late Joseph Ila and Edna Gertrude Beeson Dossett.
She attended schools in Cape Girardeau and graduated from Central High School in St. Joseph, MO in 1942. She entered the Cleveland School of Art in the fall of 1942. She pursed an Art Major and Academic Studies, including teacher training courses at Western Reserve University. She was initiated into Phi Kappa Theta Sorority at the Cleveland School of Arts. She left college after three years to pursue a working career in the art field and was a Fashion Illustrator for Sears and Roebuck Co.
On June 12, 1948 she married Robert E. Byers in Lakewood, Ohio. After Bobs retirement, they returned to Cape Girardeau, MO in 1986. Mrs. Byers was active in SEMO Arts Council and the Cape Executives Club.
Survivors include her husband Robert E. Byers of Cape Girardeau, MO, two sons, Ronald R. Byers of Soldier Grove, WI, Roger B. Byers of Madison, WI; two grandchildren Mark J. Byers and Julie L. Byers both of Des Moines, IA.Memorial service Sunday, June 28, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. at Ford & Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel with the Rev. John Gregory officiating. Friends may call after 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be given to the American Cancer Society.
