Sherman E. Hill, 83, of East Cape Girardeau, Ill., died Saturday, June 26, 2010, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Sept. 26, 1926, in West Branch, Iowa, to Adolph William "Ott" and Ethel Belle Teets Hill. He and Vicky Rudluff were married Dec. 2, 1947, at Davenport, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, Vicky Hill of East Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Trina Hill-Stokes of Fort Myers, Fla.; four grandchildren, Joshua Treece of Marion, Ill., Tia Bell and Nathan Hill of Fort Myers, Alexsis Stokes-Hunt of Maryland; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Rogula of Illinois; a daughter-in-law, Mary Hill of Florida; and his faithful dog, Zoey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kim Sherman Hill; and two sisters, Marie and Irene.
Sherman is a former U.S. Marine and was a World War II veteran, having served on Iwo Jima. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the Presidential Citation World War II Victory Medal.
He was a member of St. Mark's No. 93 Masonic Lodge in Cape Girardeau where he was a York Mason and Templar Knight Mason and the Arab Shrine Temple of Fort Myers, and VFW Post 3838.
Sherman was a retired bricklayer, stone mason and contractor. He was also an inspector for Farmers Home Administration and a real estate negotiator for the U.S. Corp of Engineers Kansas City District, a business owner, and now Silent Key (AD4FT).
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Funeral Home.
The funeral will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Judy Rogula officiating and will include military honors by VFW 3838 and Masonic Rites.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Shriners Children's Hospital.
Burial will be at a later date at Lehigh Acres Memorial Cemetery in Lehigh, Fla., where his son is also buried.
