SIKESTON -- Sgt. George W.C. Harris, 51, of Sikeston died Sunday, May 25, 1997, at his home, following an extended illness.
He was born July 24, 1945, at Charleston, son of A.J. and Josie M. Keys Harris. He and Carolyn Griffin were married in 1977.
Harris was a 1964 graduate of Lincoln High School in Charleston, and served in the U.S. Navy.
He was a city bus driver in Chicago nine years, and in 1976 became a member of Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Harris was a member of Smith Chapel United Methodist Church, Howard Lodge 72, grand secretary of St. Matthew Grand Lodge, and potentate of Salaam Temple 25.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Nicole Harris of the home; four sisters, Mildred Strong and Mary Peterson of Chicago, Jeanette Jefferson of Columbia, Carolyn Betts of Indianapolis, Ind.; two brothers, Jacob Harris of Chicago, and Alfred Harris of Memphis, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his father, a brother, and two sisters. His mother died Monday, May 26, 1997.
Friends may call at Smith Chapel Church from 4-8 p.m. Thursday.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Cornerstone Baptist Church, with the Rev. Harry Sharp officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery at Charleston.
