SCOTT CITY -- Samuel J. Hitt, 90, of Scott City, died Friday, Jan. 3, 1997, at his home. He was born Sept. 7, 1906 at Arbor, son of Walter and Alice Adkins Hitt. He and Alfredia Berklund were married Dec. 3, 1935 in Jackson. Hitt was a mills operator at Marquette-Lonestar Cement Plant until he retired in 1971. ...

SCOTT CITY -- Samuel J. Hitt, 90, of Scott City, died Friday, Jan. 3, 1997, at his home.

He was born Sept. 7, 1906 at Arbor, son of Walter and Alice Adkins Hitt. He and Alfredia Berklund were married Dec. 3, 1935 in Jackson.

Hitt was a mills operator at Marquette-Lonestar Cement Plant until he retired in 1971. He was an associate member of Memorial Wesleyan Church in Scott City and a former school board member in the Ancell School District. He also was a member of the United Lime, Gypsum and Cement Workers Union Local 164.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Essie Slinkard of Concord, N.C., and Paula Collins, Melba Buckner and Marie Vetter, all of Scott City; one brother, Walter Hitt II of Cape Girardeau; four sisters, Irene Davis and Lucille Friese, both of Cape Girardeau, Alice Henry of Perryville and Marie Dooley of Chaffee; 10 grandchildren, and 12-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Friends may call at 4 p.m. today at Amick Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The Rev. Jere Gowin will officiate with assistance from Mark Fisher, eulogist.

Burial will follow at Lightner Cemetery in Scott City.
