Ruth Meadows

Ruth B. Meadows, 86, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

She was born May 26, 1915, in rural Dunklin County, daughter of J.I. and Lilly Marker Burlison. She and Claude E. Meadows Jr. were married April 28, 1941, in Cape Girardeau. He died May 18, 1969.

Ruth attended Southeast Missouri State University and Murray State University. She taught 10 years at schools in Wardell, Holcomb and Braggadocio, Mo. During World War II she worked for the Department of the Navy.

She then worked at Landgraf Lumber Co., and from 1966-70 she was employed by Missouri Department of Liquor Control. She was appointed Cape Girardeau County treasurer by Gov. Warren Hearnes and served from 1970-72. She was a field auditor for the state auditor from 1975-78.

Ruth was very active in the Democratic Party in Cape Girardeau County and served many years as Ward 4 committeewoman.

She was very active in PTA, served two terms as president of Washington School PTA and two terms as president of District Council of PTA.

Ruth was a longtime member of Eastern Star and Tuesday Club (MFWC), longtime member of Southeast Missouri Hospital Auxiliary, very active at First Baptist Church, WMU Circle and her Sunday School class.

Survivors include a son, Ed Meadows of Jackson, Mo.; a brother, Bill Burlison of Odenton, Md.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. today.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Jay White will officiate. Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Dunklin County Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Griff Walker will officiate.
