CHARLESTON -- Ruth Ellen Heggie, 83, of Charleston, died Monday, June 5, 1995, at her home.

She was born Aug. 22, 1911, in Charleston, to John P. and Lillian Connelly Heggie.

Heggie lived in Charleston her entire life, working for the Enterprise-Courier newspaper for more than 50 years. A member of the United Methodist Church since 1924, she was a former Sunday school teacher and choir member, and was a member of the Susannah Wesley Sunday School Class, the United Methodist Women and the Administrative Board.

Heggie was a charter member and past secretary of the Mississippi County Historical Society and was a charter member and past president of the Athena Club. She had served as a member of the Dogwood-Azalea Festival Committee and was cited by the Charleston Chamber of Commerce for her work on the Community Betterment Scrapbook in past years.

On Oct. 12, 1972, she was honored as Charleston's Woman of the Year.

Survivors are two sisters, Virginia Hill of Vicksburg, Miss., and Jonnie Mehler of Southhaven, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Rolwing and Martha Heggie.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. today at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Charleston with the Rev. Richard Combs officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery.
