H. Russell Carter, 79, of St. Louis, formerly of Cape Girardeau, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, in St. Louis.

He was born Feb. 12, 1933, in St. Louis, son of Ken and Evelyn Carter. The family moved to Cape Girardeau in 1949. He graduated from Central High School in 1951 and Southeast Missouri State University in 1955.

He served in the U.S. Navy in the Panama Canal Zone.

He taught and directed theater in Nevada, Mo., and Janesville, Wis. He did graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He retired and returned to St. Louis in 1990. He was a supporter of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and was actively involved in promoting the restoration of Kiel Opera House.

Survivors include a brother, Dale Carter of Seattle, cousins and close friends.

The funeral will be Saturday. Burial will be in Valhalla Cemetery in St. Louis.

Bopp Funeral Chapel in Kirkwood, Mo., is in charge of arrangements.
