CAIRO, Ill. -- Roy V. Collins, 85, of Cairo died Saturday Jan. 18, 1997, at Murray Calloway County Hospital in Murray, Ky.

He was born Oct. 24, 1911, in Pocahontas, Ill., son of the late Homer and Birdette Plant Collins. He was the manager of the Cairo Public Utility Commission before his retirement and had been serving as a consultant.

He was a member of Tigert Memorial United Methodist Church, Cairo Elks Lodge #651, Cairo VFW Post 2649, the Cairo American Legion, Cairo Masonic Lodge #237 AF and AM, Scottish Rite Bodies of Southern Illinois, Ainad Shrine Temple, KIM Shrine Club of Cairo and the Cairo Kiwanis.

He was a 32nd degree Mason and served on the board of directors of the Cairo Chamber of Commerce. He was past president of the American Public Gas Association and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Christine Collins, of Cairo; a daughter, Rebecca Howell of Clarksville, Ind.; and a grandson.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo. An Elks memorial rite will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Kelly Cox officiating. Burial will follow in the U.S. National Cemetery at Mound City.
