Roy L. Holmes, 75, of Jackson passed away Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girar-deau.
He was born Oct. 20, 1931, in St. Louis, son of Charles B. and Myrtle L. Knotts Holmes. He and Shirley Hartle were married Nov. 6, 1954, in Jackson.
Roy graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1949. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1952, serving in Japan during the Korean conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1954.
He worked at Southwestern Bell Telephone from 1956 until retiring in 1987 after 31 years.
Roy was baptized and confirmed at Elim Lutheran Church in St. Louis, transferring his membership to St. Paul Lutheran Church in 1954. He was a member of Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 in Jackson, and had been very active in the Jackson Slow Pitch Softball League. He coached the former Heritage Savings and Loan Softball team and Optimist Basketball.
Loving survivors include his wife, Shirley; three sons, Terry (Rhonda) Holmes of Wappapello, Mo, Tom (Kristi) Holmes, and Tim Holmes of Jackson; two daughters, Sherry (Mike) Jones of Belknap, Ill., Kathy (Danny) Barks of Jackson; a brother, Dale (Bernita) Holmes of Grand Junction, Colo.; two sisters, Charlene (Duane) Kirby of Cottonwood, Ariz., Thelma (Bob) Hohbien of Montrose, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson.
The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Robert Henrichs officiating. Interment will be at 11 a.m. in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, with military honors presented by Marine Corps League 1081 of Cape Girardeau.
